Call for Competition Proposals

We invite proposals for organizing competitions in conjunction with the 2024 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2024) to be held in Buffalo, USA, in September 2024. The purpose of these competitions is to:

  1. assemble and/or release datasets for furthering biometric research.
  2. benchmark the performance of algorithms on these datasets.
  3. establish the state of the art based on the results of the competition
  4. identify challenges and open problems on specific biometric topics.

We solicit competition proposals on any topic of interest to the broader biometric community and strongly encourage proposals focusing on new emerging fields and open research questions that can attract a significant number of participants.

Competition organizers must have a strong track record in the field of biometrics and must be aware of recent or upcoming legislation and regulation related to the assembling of biometric datasets and the use of generative AI technologies for producing datasets. Further, the biometric data must conform to rules governing the storage, distribution, and utilization of data. A few references in this regard are listed below:

  1. United States – White House Executive Order
  2. EU GDPR
  3. EU AI Act
  4. The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Datasets
  5. AI Image Generation Models

All submitted proposals will be reviewed by the competition chairs. The selection process will be based on the novelty of the proposed competition, the relevance and timeliness of the problem explored, the importance of the research questions investigated, the potential to attract a large number of competitors, the likely impact of the competition, and the track record of the organizers.

Competition Proposal Submission

Competition proposals should be sent to the IJCB 2024 competition co-chairs, Arun Ross (rossarun@cse.msu.edu) and Srirangaraj Setlur (setlur@buffalo.edu) with the email subject “IJCB 2024 Competition Proposal: [title of your competition]”. The proposal should include the following information to facilitate the selection process:

  • Title of the competition.
  • Names, affiliations, contact information, and a brief biography of the competition organizers.
  • For each organizer: a list of three most relevant publications related to the competition co-authored by the organizer.
  • Justification:
    • Motivation for the competition, expected outcomes and anticipated impact,
    • Relevance to IJCB 2024,
    • Relationship to previous competitions, if any,
    • Description of the novelty of the competition.
  • Execution:
    • Description of the dataset(s) used for the competition and the available annotations,
    • Details on the experimental protocol and result generation/submission procedure,
    • Information on the platform used (for data sharing, submission, verification of the results), if any,
    • Description of the evaluation criteria (performance metrics) and available baseline implementations/code (e.g., a starter kit).
  • Organization:
    • Expected minimum number of external participants (other than the organizers),
    • Plan for advertising the competition and attracting participants,
    • Description of the planned activities,
    • A detailed timeline for the competition.
  • Other relevant information.

Schedule

The competitions should start by March 1, 2024, and be completed by June 1, 2024. The competition summary paper must be submitted via CMT by June 30, 2024 (link will be made available later).
